Venous diseases affect the veins responsible for carrying blood back to the heart. They can range from common conditions such as varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency to potentially serious problems such as Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), where a blood clot forms within a deep vein.
Advances in Interventional Radiology have transformed the way many venous conditions can be managed. Using ultrasound, X-ray and other imaging techniques, an Interventional Radiologist can diagnose and treat problems within the veins through small needle punctures and catheters—often avoiding major surgery.
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): When a Blood Clot Blocks a Vein
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot develops in a deep vein, most commonly in the leg. It may cause pain, swelling, warmth or heaviness, although some patients may have few symptoms.
DVT requires timely medical attention because part of the clot can potentially travel to the lungs and cause a pulmonary embolism, which can be life-threatening.
Treatment depends on the location and extent of the clot, the patient's symptoms and overall clinical condition. While many patients are treated with anticoagulant medication, selected patients may benefit from advanced image-guided treatments.
These can include catheter-directed thrombolysis, where clot-dissolving medication is delivered directly to the affected area, or mechanical thrombectomy, where specialised devices are used to remove the clot and restore blood flow. In selected situations, an Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) filter may be placed to help prevent blood clots from reaching the lungs.


Advanced DVT management can include targeted, image-guided clot treatment and IVC filter placement in selected patients.

Varicose Veins: More Than a Cosmetic Concern
Varicose veins develop when valves within the veins do not function properly, allowing blood to pool and causing the veins to become enlarged and twisted.
While visible veins are often the first concern, venous disease can also cause aching, heaviness, swelling, itching, cramps and skin changes. For some patients, symptoms can gradually affect everyday comfort and quality of life.
Modern treatments such as Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT/EVLA) and VenaSeal allow diseased veins to be closed from within using catheter-based techniques. Blood is then naturally redirected through healthier veins.
These treatments are minimally invasive, generally require no major surgical incisions and can allow patients to return to normal activities relatively quickly.

Why Image-Guided Venous Treatment?
Interventional Radiology allows treatment to be delivered precisely where it is needed while minimising trauma to surrounding tissues.
Depending on the condition and treatment selected, potential advantages can include smaller access sites, less discomfort, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery compared with conventional surgery.
Most importantly, treatment is tailored to the individual patient. Not every DVT requires thrombectomy, and not every varicose vein requires intervention. Appropriate imaging and specialist evaluation help determine the right treatment approach.

Persistent leg pain, heaviness, swelling, prominent veins, recurrent cramps or skin changes should not simply be ignored.
Sudden swelling or pain in one leg, particularly when associated with breathlessness or chest pain, requires prompt medical evaluation because it may indicate DVT or pulmonary embolism.
